One of our valued customers, Barbara O'Brien, sent us this exciting recipe for Caprese Salad, using Balsamic Silver Palate County Dressing.

It is an amazing taste...slices of tomato, mozzarella, and basil spread out on a platter and covered with this dressing....some small slices of bread with a little olive oil on them can hold a tomato , mozzarella and basil....DYNAMITE!

Grain Berry Crop!

Bob Harris, founder of Silver Palate GRAIN BERRY antioxidant cereals, pancake mix, muffin mix and crackers checked test plantings of Grain Berry, "Berries of Grain," which adds dietary fiber and high levels of antioxidants to Grain Berry products. The crop is doing well despite drought since it requires 50% less water than corn.

ORAC confirmed as reliable measure of antioxidant value

ORAC means "Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity" which us what antioxidants can do best - namely to slow down or stop oxidation that causes inflammation of human tissue and damage to our cells. A high ORAC food helps slow down the aging process. In fact, the Brunswick Laboratories did a study with the following conclusion:

Conclusions:
The central message from this study is that natural products in a variety of standardized forms demonstrate significant efficacy against primary wellness factors. This is indicative of the multi-faceted anti-aging effects of natural products—in particular, those with a complex matrix of active constituents.

Another meaningful result of this study is the broad correlation between Total ORAC and cell-based outcomes. Although preliminary, these results support the view that Total ORAC is a useful tool for suggesting not only antioxidant, but also other important anti-aging outcomes.

This is why Silver Palate utilizes this measure to indicate antioxidant content of its Grain Berry Bran Flakes, Toasted Oats, Pancake & Waffle Mix, Muffin Mix and Crackers.

Silver Palate To Supply Food to Homeless Children in Florida.

In the March 6 "60-Minutes" program on CBS television, the show did a story on the great numbers of children in the Orlando area whose families have lost homes and were living in one-room motel locations. School buses stop there to pick up and drop off the kids from school and many of them do not have enough to eat and actually go to bed hungry. Silver Palate called down to Orlando and talked to the school system and learned that they did not need food for school lunches since that is supplied by various levels of government. However, they do not have enough food at dinner time and help is needed for that purpose. Thus, Silver Palate is arranging to make individual bowls of its Grain Berry Antioxidant Bran Flakes and crackers as well as its pasta sauce and pasta to supply for that purpose. Hopefully, as the economy improves, their parents will find employment and get back into regular homes again. Let us all be conscious of the situation of our neighbors. If not us...who?

Silver Palate Icons of Elegant Foods To Get New Attention

Many people do not know that the founders of The Silver Palate, Julee Rosso and Sheila Lukins, authors of the world-famous Silver Palate Cookbooks and found in millions of homes after more than 25 years, also created icons of remarkable and delicious foods still on the market today. They include Silver Palate Mango Chutney, Sweet & Rough Mustard, Julee's Caesar Salad Splash, Balsamic Country Salad Splash, Apricot-Mustard Grilling  Sauce and other long-established condiments and foods. If you want to try one or more of them, check the Silver Palate website and order it from our famous Silver Palate online store. It's the one with a blue awning on the screen and it's open to serve you 24-hours a day.

Can a food become a new icon?

Our Silver Palate President, Peter Harris, enlisted his dad (Bob Harris) to help enrich the pantry of Silver Palate foods (Bob was the founder of Smart Balance). Since he joined his son, Peter in this quest, several new items were added and our loyal customers should know about them. They include Grain Berry Antioxidant Ready-To-Eat Bran Flakes, Toasted Oats (Regular, Apple Cinnamon, Honey Nut), Pancake & Waffle Mix; Muffin Mix and Snack Crackers; Low Sodium Marinara Sauce, Thick & Sassy Pasta Sauce, Tomato Romano (maybe the height of a taste sensation) and Spin Blend Whipped Salad Dressing. He likes to say this is not your grandmother's mayonnaise because its tangy flavor wakes up salads and sandwiches in a big way. If you want to try any of them, check your local store or order from our Silver Palate Online Store with the blue awning and the red geraniums on the screen. Open all day - every day - to serve you. All it needs to duplicate the original store is a checkered burgundy and white apron and its 1977 again.

One ingredient. OATS.

Mark Bittman on McDonald's New Oatmeal offering.

Unlike McDonald's Oatmeal reviewed above in the NY Times, The Silver Palate's Thick & Rough Oatmeal has one ingredient. Oats.

Not only is it oats, it's more hearty oats than others and extra toasted. Silver Palate Thick & Rough Oatmeal is a subatanial, filling breakfast and more delicious than most since it's double toasted in a granola oven.

Nothing more basic. No oatmeal is more nutritious and no is oatmeal more delicious. No sugar, no
flavoring and no salt added.

The Right Sauce for the Right Pasta!

Silver Palate announces new program in which it tailors its pasta sauce items to specific types of pasta for perfect pasta enjoyment and taste. Penne, Ziti, Elbows, Rigatoni and other short pasta styles go perfectly with Silver Palate Vodka Elegante Sauce. Also, Silver Palate's new Tomato Romano Sauce is also great with penne, etc.

Longer pastas such as spaghetti and linguini are geared to Silver Palate Marinara, Deluxe Tomato Basil, Fra Diavolo (Arrabiata) and new Low Sodium Marinara. These thinner sauces surround the longer strands which absorb the tasteful sauce and enhance the flavor of the spaghetti and linguini types of pasta.

Silver Palate Marinara Wins Favorite

Elisa Jung of The Bergen Record recently held a Marinara Tasting for her food blog, and Silver Palate Marinara received top honors.

"The favorite this time around turned out to be a supermarket brand distributed by a Cresskill-based company – Silver Palate (you may have the cookbook). It contains imported San Marzano tomatoes combined with tomatoes from California and other simple ingredients, including olive oil, onions, garlic – and even a little pear concentrate."

Silver Palate Creates Grain Berry Brand Cereals and more.

You may have heard the radio ads about new Silver Palate Grain Berry cereals, pancake and waffle mix, snack crackers and other foods. This new line is not just another brand of foods. Silver Palate research spent three years developing a new grain that contains more natural antioxidants than other grains, even more than other fruits and vegetables.  Even more than berries and wine.

The name of the grain is high tannin sorghum. Sorghum is the fifth most popular grain in the world. It originated in Africa two thousand years ago where water was scarce and they needed a grain to feed their animals and themselves that would grow in arid soils and climate. There are many types of sorghum, mostly related to  color. The high-tannin variety was not popular with farmers since the cattle who were fed it did not gain much weight. Thus, it was ignored until now. The Silver Palate was not able to buy this grain since farmers did not wish to grow it. So we contracted with farmers in West Texas in dry soils and decorticated the grain (stripped off the outer layer which contained the bran, highest in fiber and highest in antioxidants.) So high, it was reported by the USDA as higher than other grains and fruits, vegetables, and berries.

You can purchase Grain Berry Bran Flakes, Toasted Oat cereals in plain, Apple Cinnamon and Honey Nut varieties as well as Grain Berry Pancake Mix, Muffin Mix and two flavors of Crackers. Not only does Silver Palate's new Grain Berry foods offer you natural antioxidants, it offers  reduced sugars and sodium, making it a very healthy and delicious line of foods indeed.

New Low Sodium Marinara Sauce

Peter Harris, President of Silver Palate Kitchens, Inc. announced this January the company's new Marinara Pasta Sauce with low enough sodium to qualify as a low sodium food. Most pasta sauce products contain about 350mg to 600mg of sodium per serving. Mr. Harris stated that the company's new Marinara sauce contains only 115mg of sodium per half cup serving.

"Does it taste blah?" asked many consumers. Mr. Harris said, "Try it yourself. Our pasta sauces contain imported San Marzano whole tomatoes and no tomato paste and no added sugar. The taste of the tomatoes is what you taste and, I believe, will truly enjoy".

The American Heart Association and other health and nutrition leaders are urging consumers to cut down on sodium in processed foods. The new sauce takes its place among the company's other pasta sauce items, including, Regular Marinara, Deluxe Tomato Basil, Fra Diavolo and Vodka Elegante Sauce.

Silver Palate Flies to San Francisco

The Fancy Food Show takes place at the Mosconi Convention Center in downtown San Francisco on January 16 through the 18th. Hundreds of food companies will show the specialty food retailers their new items and new ideas.

Silver Palate will feature its new Grain Berry Line, its whole tomato pasta sauce items, salad splashes and long-time favorite, Thick & Rough oatmeal, the hot cereal with no added sugar or salt and thicker flakes for a heartier taste and texture.
