Grain Berry Might Help Fight Obesity

Grain Berry Cereals and Baking Mixes contain high tannin sorghum bran along with whole grain oats (Toasted Oats) and whole grain wheat (Bran Flakes).
The high tannins are similar to those in red wine, blueberries and chocolate. One of the less known facts about high tannins in sorghum is the fact that it binds with carbohydrates and other nutrients and a goodly amount does not get absorbed in the body  - thus, not producing fat and calories.
That is a well-established fact about the tannins in sorghum and that can be important news in the campaign against obesity.

How did we find out? The cows and chickens told us!

Scientists have known for many years that high tannins bind with carbs, protein and other nutrients and are excreted from the body without being absorbed as fat.

But Grain Berry learned about it from farmers who told us that when their cows start eating high tannin sorghum, they don't put on weight. Same story with their chickens.

That is not a good thing for beef cattle (and chickens) that are sold based on weight. So we thank the skinny cows and lean chickens for letting us food people know what could be a very important benefit for people in this age of an obesity epidemic.

A new website revoutionizes Silver Palate!

Find everything you need at the Silver Palate website, and take a tour around the beautiful designs and the information sure to whet your appetite.

Here is a letter from Peter Harris, President and CEO:

We at the Silver Palate Kitchens have a passion for good simple food. We love the taste of homemade -- pure and natural. In all our products and recipes we blend heart and soul, a bit of our own instincts and ingenuity, and only the best highest quality ingredients.

It all started 35 years ago, when a wondrous jewel of a food store opened on Manhattan's Upper West Side. It was named The Silver Palate. It opened with a pure and simple idea -- to prepare delicious and great looking food from only the best natural ingredients available.  It was started by two women, Julee Rosso & Sheila Lukens, who had a passion for good simple food.    It was a one-stop magic for a home cooked meal. They cooked fresh every day, used the best, highest quality ingredients and enjoyed the enthusiastic support of the neighborhood. This was the beginning of The Silver Palate.

With their commitment to constant quality, their reputation grew and as word spread of The Silver Palate's magical recipes, the idea was born to package some of the condiments - like Good Old Apricot Mustard Sauce, Balsamic Country Salad Splash, Sweet & Rough Mustard and Spiced Cranberry Apple Chutney. The secret was that if you could marinate, glaze, sauté, spread, dip, splash, toss or drizzle any of the condiments on meat, poultry, fish or vegetables,  they would magically give a home cooked meal a  truly exciting flavor.

Thus was born The Silver Palate Kitchen's line of original Salad Splash dressings, cooking sauces, dessert toppings and chutneys made by hand, in small batches, under the most rigorous standards. It was another instant hit. And for a good reason.  As life was becoming more complex and women increasingly had to balance the demands of work and family, Silver Palate foods offered them a way to have it all... the chance to easily create inspired homemade meals in their own kitchens, for friends and family. Cooking with The Silver Palate products was like having a friend helping you in the kitchen.

Today, the tradition lives on. The times have changed, but our commitment to great food made of the highest quality ingredients has not. We continue to offer a broad line of products updated for today's tastes and a way of life. We've blended flavors from around the world to infuse taste and excitement into contemporary lighter fare -- the kind of food you can enjoy every day. Products, with premium quality ingredients that you can pronounce, robust spices and fresh flavors and a spark of flavor which will make you feel like a wizard in the kitchen.

Please try our products, use them to make delicious homemade meals within minutes in your favorite recipes or ours. And let us know how you like them. We want to hear from you. You can visit us on Facebook, share your recipes or simply tell us what you like and what we can do to make your experience more enjoyable.

Heart Grains!!

In an experiment, twenty-five people were fed high tannin sorghum bran along with a diet which included yogurt with live cultures. Another group were not fed that for a period of time and then both groups were tested medically and took a "vacation" from that eating test and then, after 30 days, reversed what they ate.

The sorghum eaters were not given sorghum in the second part of the test whole the non-sorghum eaters became the high tannin sorghum eaters for a period of time. After this eating test was completed each group was again tested and it was concluded:

The high tannin sorghum eaters enjoyed better gut health in terms of keeping their beneficial bacteria alive and well longer than the non-eaters of high tannin sorghum, the same kind of ingredient used in Grain Berry cereals, baking mixes and crackers.

The high tannin sorghum which Silver Palate adds to whole grains oats and wheat in its Bran Flakes, Toasted Oats, Honey Nut Toasted Oats Cereals, Pancake & Waffle Mix, Brownie Mix, Muffin Mix, etc. helps your beneficial bacteria in your digestive system and in your yogurt with live cultures because Grain Berry serves you as a prebiotic!

So for better gut health, eat yogurt with live cultures (probiotics) and Grain Berry as a prebiotic with high tannin sorghum bran we call Heart Grains.

SIMMER DINNER WINNER - Arlene Aughey - Lamb Skillet Dinner!

I live in Saddle Brook, New Jersey, a suburban town in northern New Jersey only 12 miles away from New York City.  My career was in NYC, where I worked as a free-lance court reporter.  Now retired, I enjoy my family - hubby, George (on the left), 2 grown daughters, 4 beautiful grandchildren, and a variety of dogs and cats between them and us!

I have always been environmentally conscious, which of course leads one to being health-conscious, and have always been a supporter of environmental and animal welfare organizations.  Having always had a garden - never using pesticides, of course! - I do enjoy cooking and trying out different recipes.  I especially enjoy using whole grains, fresh veggies, and herbs.  I prefer lamb to most other meats, and think that just broiling is boring, so many years ago, I got the idea of simmering some chops gently in fresh tomatoes and veggies from the garden, and serving it over a bed of rice.  It came out quite well, so it went into my recipe box!

I became aware of Silver Palate products from first seeing an advertisement for Grain Berry Oatmeal, which was right up my alley, being a natural healthy whole grain.  There was a coupon on the box to try out another of your products, and so we searched for Silver Palate in the store, discovered your tomato sauces, and voila - tried it out with my Lamp Skillet Dinner, and it added another layer of delicious flavors to the dish.

I have since then purchased your Grain Berry Honey Nut Toasted Oats for my grandkids, who love it, and have also tried out your Grain Berry Pancake and Waffle Mix, to which I added a can of creamed corn for the liquid, and served for dinner with warm maple syrup and slices of leftover ham.  (You can see I am not afraid to be a creative cook!)  They were absolutely delicious.  And of course your oatmeal is my standard Wintertime breakfast.

Think Johnny Cash's - WALK THE LINE - Grain Berry Style

"Watch your line boys, watch your line
Grain Berry Bran Flakes do it just fine
Watch your line girls, watch your line
Grain Berry Toasted Oats do it so fine.

What that means: we will look for two bulky football line backers to act as symbolic protectors of the family when kids take a bus to go to school (imagine two burly guys in uniform getting on the little bus with the kids) or go shopping with Mom (they stand around as she food shops or tries on a jacket) but they do not interact with the action.

They are there only symbolically to protect the family as Grain Berry does. The family does not see the men. They are just there to symbolically protect the family against whatever is out there to affect their well being. In fact, in the morning when Mom serves Grain Berry cereal to the kids, the linebackers are also at the table in full uniform and helmets but the family does not see them. We may have the linebackers serve themselves with Grain Berry cereal, however.

ORAC confirmed as reliable measure of antioxidant value

ORAC means "Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity" which us what antioxidants can do best - namely to slow down or stop oxidation that causes inflammation of human tissue and damage to our cells. A high ORAC food helps slow down the aging process. In fact, the Brunswick Laboratories did a study with the following conclusion:

Conclusions:
The central message from this study is that natural products in a variety of standardized forms demonstrate significant efficacy against primary wellness factors. This is indicative of the multi-faceted anti-aging effects of natural products—in particular, those with a complex matrix of active constituents.

Another meaningful result of this study is the broad correlation between Total ORAC and cell-based outcomes. Although preliminary, these results support the view that Total ORAC is a useful tool for suggesting not only antioxidant, but also other important anti-aging outcomes.

This is why Silver Palate utilizes this measure to indicate antioxidant content of its Grain Berry Bran Flakes, Toasted Oats, Pancake & Waffle Mix, Muffin Mix and Crackers.

Silver Palate To Supply Food to Homeless Children in Florida.

In the March 6 "60-Minutes" program on CBS television, the show did a story on the great numbers of children in the Orlando area whose families have lost homes and were living in one-room motel locations. School buses stop there to pick up and drop off the kids from school and many of them do not have enough to eat and actually go to bed hungry. Silver Palate called down to Orlando and talked to the school system and learned that they did not need food for school lunches since that is supplied by various levels of government. However, they do not have enough food at dinner time and help is needed for that purpose. Thus, Silver Palate is arranging to make individual bowls of its Grain Berry Antioxidant Bran Flakes and crackers as well as its pasta sauce and pasta to supply for that purpose. Hopefully, as the economy improves, their parents will find employment and get back into regular homes again. Let us all be conscious of the situation of our neighbors. If not us...who?

Silver Palate Icons of Elegant Foods To Get New Attention

Many people do not know that the founders of The Silver Palate, Julee Rosso and Sheila Lukins, authors of the world-famous Silver Palate Cookbooks and found in millions of homes after more than 25 years, also created icons of remarkable and delicious foods still on the market today. They include Silver Palate Mango Chutney, Sweet & Rough Mustard, Julee's Caesar Salad Splash, Balsamic Country Salad Splash, Apricot-Mustard Grilling  Sauce and other long-established condiments and foods. If you want to try one or more of them, check the Silver Palate website and order it from our famous Silver Palate online store. It's the one with a blue awning on the screen and it's open to serve you 24-hours a day.

Can a food become a new icon?

Our Silver Palate President, Peter Harris, enlisted his dad (Bob Harris) to help enrich the pantry of Silver Palate foods (Bob was the founder of Smart Balance). Since he joined his son, Peter in this quest, several new items were added and our loyal customers should know about them. They include Grain Berry Antioxidant Ready-To-Eat Bran Flakes, Toasted Oats (Regular, Apple Cinnamon, Honey Nut), Pancake & Waffle Mix; Muffin Mix and Snack Crackers; Low Sodium Marinara Sauce, Thick & Sassy Pasta Sauce, Tomato Romano (maybe the height of a taste sensation) and Spin Blend Whipped Salad Dressing. He likes to say this is not your grandmother's mayonnaise because its tangy flavor wakes up salads and sandwiches in a big way. If you want to try any of them, check your local store or order from our Silver Palate Online Store with the blue awning and the red geraniums on the screen. Open all day - every day - to serve you. All it needs to duplicate the original store is a checkered burgundy and white apron and its 1977 again.

One ingredient. OATS.

Mark Bittman on McDonald's New Oatmeal offering.

Unlike McDonald's Oatmeal reviewed above in the NY Times, The Silver Palate's Thick & Rough Oatmeal has one ingredient. Oats.

Not only is it oats, it's more hearty oats than others and extra toasted. Silver Palate Thick & Rough Oatmeal is a subatanial, filling breakfast and more delicious than most since it's double toasted in a granola oven.

Nothing more basic. No oatmeal is more nutritious and no is oatmeal more delicious. No sugar, no
flavoring and no salt added.

Silver Palate Marinara Wins Favorite

Elisa Jung of The Bergen Record recently held a Marinara Tasting for her food blog, and Silver Palate Marinara received top honors.

"The favorite this time around turned out to be a supermarket brand distributed by a Cresskill-based company – Silver Palate (you may have the cookbook). It contains imported San Marzano tomatoes combined with tomatoes from California and other simple ingredients, including olive oil, onions, garlic – and even a little pear concentrate."

Silver Palate Creates Grain Berry Brand Cereals and more.

You may have heard the radio ads about new Silver Palate Grain Berry cereals, pancake and waffle mix, snack crackers and other foods. This new line is not just another brand of foods. Silver Palate research spent three years developing a new grain that contains more natural antioxidants than other grains, even more than other fruits and vegetables.  Even more than berries and wine.

The name of the grain is high tannin sorghum. Sorghum is the fifth most popular grain in the world. It originated in Africa two thousand years ago where water was scarce and they needed a grain to feed their animals and themselves that would grow in arid soils and climate. There are many types of sorghum, mostly related to  color. The high-tannin variety was not popular with farmers since the cattle who were fed it did not gain much weight. Thus, it was ignored until now. The Silver Palate was not able to buy this grain since farmers did not wish to grow it. So we contracted with farmers in West Texas in dry soils and decorticated the grain (stripped off the outer layer which contained the bran, highest in fiber and highest in antioxidants.) So high, it was reported by the USDA as higher than other grains and fruits, vegetables, and berries.

You can purchase Grain Berry Bran Flakes, Toasted Oat cereals in plain, Apple Cinnamon and Honey Nut varieties as well as Grain Berry Pancake Mix, Muffin Mix and two flavors of Crackers. Not only does Silver Palate's new Grain Berry foods offer you natural antioxidants, it offers  reduced sugars and sodium, making it a very healthy and delicious line of foods indeed.

New Low Sodium Marinara Sauce

Peter Harris, President of Silver Palate Kitchens, Inc. announced this January the company's new Marinara Pasta Sauce with low enough sodium to qualify as a low sodium food. Most pasta sauce products contain about 350mg to 600mg of sodium per serving. Mr. Harris stated that the company's new Marinara sauce contains only 115mg of sodium per half cup serving.

"Does it taste blah?" asked many consumers. Mr. Harris said, "Try it yourself. Our pasta sauces contain imported San Marzano whole tomatoes and no tomato paste and no added sugar. The taste of the tomatoes is what you taste and, I believe, will truly enjoy".

The American Heart Association and other health and nutrition leaders are urging consumers to cut down on sodium in processed foods. The new sauce takes its place among the company's other pasta sauce items, including, Regular Marinara, Deluxe Tomato Basil, Fra Diavolo and Vodka Elegante Sauce.

Silver Palate Flies to San Francisco

The Fancy Food Show takes place at the Mosconi Convention Center in downtown San Francisco on January 16 through the 18th. Hundreds of food companies will show the specialty food retailers their new items and new ideas.

Silver Palate will feature its new Grain Berry Line, its whole tomato pasta sauce items, salad splashes and long-time favorite, Thick & Rough oatmeal, the hot cereal with no added sugar or salt and thicker flakes for a heartier taste and texture.
